The Pico 31 de Março ( Portuguese for summit on March 31 is) with 2,973 meters the second highest mountain in Brazil . It is located in the massif of the Pico da Neblina , the highest Brazilian peak, only 687 meters away from it via a saddle , in the mountains of Guiana in the north-western state of Amazonas not far from the southern border of Venezuela . The Venezuelan name is Pico Phelps , in honor of the ornithologists William Henry Phelps, Jr. .
The name of the mountain was given by the military expedition that first climbed the summit. It is derived from the date of the military coup in Brazil in 1964 and was not changed after the military dictatorship in 1985.
Up until a new survey in 2004, a summit height of 2992 meters was assumed.
