The Picton Harbor is located between the Queen Charlotte Sound and the city Picton , the end point is the natural harbor. The elongated body of water has a north-northeast orientation and, including the marina, has a length of around 2.4 km, a maximum width of around 700 m and a port entrance around 750 m wide. Port use
Port operator
The port facilities in Picton Harbor are operated by Port Marlborough New Zealand Ltd. (PMNZ) operated. In their Waimahara Wharf ships with a length of up to 320 m and a maximum draft of up to 13.5 m can dock and be handled. The port operations also include the facilities in Shakespeare Bay, around 600 m west of Picton Harbor on the other side of the up to 155 m high dividing headland, where cruise ships can also dock.
Ferry service
With the two ferry companies Interislander and Blue Bridge, there are two operators of ferry connections between the port of Wellington on the North Island and that of Picton on the South Island. The ferries, which serve the 92 km long route with a journey time of around three hours several times a day, not only handle passenger and vehicle transport, but also all general cargo traffic between the islands.
Marina
In the southeastern corner of the natural harbor is the Picton Marina, a yacht harbor that, together with the Waikawa Marina , just under 3.5 km northeast in Waikawa Bay , offers around 1,250 berths.
