The pipit ( Anthus ) are a genus of birds from the subordination of songbirds . They are relatively small birds with a medium to long tail. Together with the stilts and the two monotypical genera Tmetothylacus and Dendronanthus , they belong to the family of stilts and pipiters .

Pipiters are slender, usually inconspicuous insectivores. They usually enter into monogamous relationships and defend breeding grounds. They are ground brooders with a clutch of up to six eggs. Up to 40 species are assigned to the genus, which makes them the most species-rich genus within their family. The taxonomic assignment of individual species and subspecies is, however, disputed; some authors also include fewer species in this genus.

Pieper are represented almost worldwide, they are only missing in the tropical rainforests, in the drier deserts and on the Antarctic continent. In the subarctic the coming Pechora Pipit , the meadow pipit and the Red-throated Pipit ago. The giant pipit and correnderapper breed in the sub- Antarctic . To those in Central Europe represented Anthus TYPES among other Tree Pipit , Meadow Pipit, Red-throated Pipit, Tawny Pipit and Water Pipit .
