The Pacific water pipit ( Anthus rubescens ), also known as the Pacific pipit or Pacific water pipit , is a small songbird belonging to the family of stilts and pipiters . It lives in North America, an Asian subspecies, Anthus rubescens japonicus lives in Japan, China, Korea and eastern Siberia. The species has only been recognized as a separate species for a few years; it was previously considered a subspecies of the water pipit along with two other species .

Pacific water pipits become 15-16 cm long. The birds are gray-brown on top, their bills and legs are dark. The outer control springs are white. In the splendid dress , the entire underside is warm beige, the chest is often dotted with dark lines. In the plain dress, the chest and flanks are clearly diffuse dashed, the belly is whitish. A. r. japonicus is darker and grayer on top, the legs are red-brown.

He lives in North America, in the summer in Greenland , on Baffin Island , Alaska , in Canada in British Columbia , in the Northwest Territories , along the coast of the Hudson Bay , on Newfoundland and in the north of the Labrador Peninsula . In the United States, it occurs along the Rocky Mountains . Pacific water pipits breed in the arctic tundra , the populations further south high in the mountains.

The migratory bird spends the winter in the southern United States, the Bahamas , Mexico and Central America . In winter they can be found near bodies of water and in fields. The species has been detected several times in Western Europe, but is an extremely rare exception here.
