Pier Paolo Calzolari (* 1943 in Bologna , Italy ) is an Italian artist. From the mid-1960s he was a pioneer and main representative of Arte Povera . He later painted informal pictures as well. He lives and works in Lisbon , Portugal.

Pier Paolo Calzolari was professor of painting at the Accademia di Belli Arti in Urbino from 1966 to 1970 and from 2002 to 2003 .

In his work he addresses material contrasts and makes nuances perceptible. He designed performances and included the light effects of neon tubes and signs of fire and damage in his concepts, for example in " Actions of Passion ", a series of 9 actions in the years 1968 to 1970.

In the 1970s, Calzolari began painting and created monochrome color surfaces in connection with objects and living beings. He included, for example, children, fish, dogs or roses.

In the 1980s he developed his own gestural and color-intensive painting, which also includes mythical symbols. He came into the area of ​​the transavant-garde .

Calzolari also created installations and objects in which he combines the plastic with sensitive material structures. This includes his work with frozen objects, for example iced metalwork, such as the " curtain " from 1998. Pier Paolo Calzolari was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Individual Mythologies : Processes department and also at Documenta IX im Represented as an artist in 1992.
