Piero Operto (born December 20, 1926 in Turin , † May 4, 1949 in Superga ) was an Italian football player. Active for AS Casale and AC Turin , he was one of the victims of the Superga plane crash .

Career

Piero Operto was born on December 20, 1926 in the northern Italian metropolis of Turin and began playing football at AS Casale , where he had his first position in professional football from 1946. The club was in second class in 1946, but had to go to third class as the bottom of the table of Girone A of Serie B in 1946/47 . Thus ended Piero Opertos first season in football coinciding with the relegation from the Serie B . In the following third division season, AS Casale was sovereign first of the Girone D. A promotion was denied to the club, as in that year, due to a league reform, no promoted to Serie B were earned.

In the summer of 1948 Piero Operto joined AC Turin after 71 league games with four goals for AS Casale . At that time, the club was by far the best football team in Italy , which was also known as Grande Torino due to its successes . The team around players like Valentino Mazzola , Ezio Loik and Guglielmo Gabetto won the Italian football championship five times in a row between 1942 and 1949, interrupted only by the Second World War , and dominated Italian football especially in the second half of the 1940s. At AC Turin Piero Operto was able to establish himself as a regular player after initial difficulties and came to eleven inserts in the course of Serie A in 1948/49 . At the beginning of May 1949, Torino was certain as champions and then flew to Lisbon for a friendly match . On the way back, the Fiat G.212 aircraft crashed into Turin's local mountain Superga in heavy fog . The accident killed 31 people, there were no survivors. As a result of this plane crash, Piero Operto, who was only 22 years old, lost his life along with all the other AC Turin players who traveled with them.
