The Fiat G.212 was an Italian three-engine aircraft manufactured by Fiat. It was an enlarged version of the Fiat G.12 . It was used in small numbers as a civil passenger aircraft and by the Aeronautica Militare as a transport aircraft. A total of 19 aircraft were built.

history

The first prototype of the G.212, called the G.212CA, flew on January 19, 1947. The configuration was similar to the G.12; H. an all - metal low- wing aircraft with retractable landing gear and tail wheel . However, the G.212 was longer and also had a larger wingspan and a wider fuselage. The G.212A was powered by three Alfa Romeo 128 radial engines with 642 kW each.

Two other versions were later built for civil use: a passenger plane (G.212CP) that offered space for 34 passengers, and a transport version (G.212TP). Both already used the more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines.

use

Six machines of the type G.212CP were acquired from 1947 onwards by the Italian airline Avio Linee Italiane , which used them in scheduled services within Europe. The Egyptian airline SAIDE (Services Aériens Internationaux d'Egypte) received three G.212s in 1948. Four of the machines were later sold by Avio Linee Italiane to the successor company Ali Flotte Riunite, which in turn later sold an aircraft to the Kuwaiti company Arabian Desert Airlines .

Military use

  • ItalyItaly Italy : Aeronautica Militare acquired both the G.212CA prototype and six additional G.212CP aircraft, two of which were later converted into trainer aircraft (G.212AV). One of these aircraft was preserved and is now in the Italian Aviation Museum Vigna di Valle near Rome .

Incidents

  • On May 4, 1949, a Fiat G.212CP of the Avio Linee Italiane (I-ELCE) flew in thick fog against the mountain of the Superga hill near Turin . All 31 inmates, most of whom were players from the AC Turin football club , were killed (see Superga plane crash ).
  • On October 16, 1949, a Fiat G.212CP of the Egyptian SAIDE (SU-AFX) had an accident while taking off from Alexandria Airport ( Egypt ). The machine was supposed to fly to Benghazi and was irreparably damaged. All three crew members, the only occupants, survived the accident.
