Guglielmo Gabetto (born February 24, 1916 in Turin , † May 4, 1949 in Superga ) was an Italian football player .

Career

Juventus Turin (1934-1941)

Guglielmo Gabetto began playing football in 1934 on the Juventus professional team . At Juventus, he initially played with other Italian stars of the time such as Giovanni Ferrari , Alfredo Foni or the two naturalized former Argentines Luis Monti and Renato Cesarini and won the championship in his first season. However, Gabetto made only six games without scoring in the 1934/35 season . The 1935/36 season went better for him personally, if not for his club. With twenty goals in twenty-two games, Gabetto finished second on the scorers list behind Giuseppe Meazza of Ambrosiana-Inter . In the championship, however, he missed the title defense with Juventus, they only reached a fifth place in the table, while FC Bologna was Italian football champions. Juve achieved the same placement in 1936/37 , Gabetto was again runner-up among the best league goal scorers with seventeen goals scored. The Serie A 1937/38 he finished with his club in second place, two points behind the new Italian champions Ambrosiana-Inter. Gabetto was not one of the top goalscorers and scored only nine goals in twenty-two league games. In the following three seasons, Guglielmo Gabetto and Juventus Turin did not convince either.

AC Turin (1941-1949)

For the 1941/42 season Guglielmo Gabetto changed the club and joined local rivals AC Turin . Here he became a regular player and was runner-up with Torino in his first season at the Stadio Filadelfia , just three points behind AS Roma . The next season then marked the beginning of the dominance of AC Turin in football Italy in the 1940s . Only interrupted by the Second World War was the Grande Torino , as the former team of AC Turin to internationally renowned players like Valentino Mazzola , Romeo Menti or the world champion from 1938 , Pietro Ferraris whether their success was called fifth consecutive win the Italian championship and dominate Serie A especially after the war . Guglielmo Gabetto was part of the Turin attack line and scored many goals each year. His top score in the AC Turin jersey was 23 goals in 36 games in the 1947/48 season. This year, the Grande Torino set a record by scoring the most goals in an Italian Serie A season, with 125 goals in 33 goals conceded and an undisputed first place ahead of AC Milan .

National team

During his time at AC Turin, Guglielmo Gabetto also played in the Italian national football team . Between 1942 and 1948 he made a total of six internationals and scored five goals. Gambetto made his debut on April 5, 1942 in the friendly against Croatia in Genoa , which Italy won 4-0. He scored a hit on his debut. In the 3-2 international win against Hungary in Turin on May 11, 1947, he scored two goals. Guglielmo Gabetto made his last international match on May 16, 1948 in a 4-0 defeat by England in Turin.

death

After AC Turin was established as the Italian champions in 1948/49 after 1-1 in Bari , President Ferruccio Novo arranged a friendly against SL Benfica in Lisbon . On the way back, the plane that was carrying the crew of the Grande Torino back home collided with a rock on the Superga pilgrimage hill near Turin in heavy fog and crashed. All inmates died in the accident, including players and coaches from AC Turin. Guglielmo Gabetto also died on May 4th 1949, he was 33 years old. Only Sauro Tomà was left of the big Torino team after the crash, as he had not flown due to an injury.
