Pierre Aycelin de Montaigut

Pierre Aycelin de Montaigut OSB (* between 1320 and 1325; † November 8, 1388 in Reims ) was a French bishop , cardinal and diplomat; he was called Cardinal of Laon .

Life

He was the nephew of Gilles II Aycelin de Montaigut , and like that Doctor of Canon Law . Pierre Aycelin was a Benedictine and prior of St-Martin-des-Champs . In 1359 he became Chancellor of Count John of Poitou , son of King John II , in 1361 Bishop of Nevers , in 1371 Bishop of Laon . In 1383 he was raised to cardinal ( pseudo cardinal ).

Pierre Aycelin was one of the advisors to King Charles V , and after his death one of the advisors was the uncle of the new king, Charles VI. He played a role in the support of France for the antipope Clement VII (1379), after which he tried in vain to bring the county of Flanders under the suzerainty of Avignon (1383).
