Pierre Broodcoorens (* 1885 in Brussels , † 1924 in La Hulpe ) was a Belgian writer .

Life

Broodcoorens' family came from East Flanders. He himself grew up in Brussels. He was literarily influenced by the Belgian authors Georges Eekhoud and Camille Lemonnier . Among a multitude of poems, novels and dramas, his best-known work is the novel Le sang des Flamands rouge , in which he deals with the suppression of the Flemings by the Spanish and French. It was published in sequels in the Belgian socialist newspaper Le Peuple in 1914 . In 1916 a German translation by Johannes Schlaf was published under the title Rotes Flamenblut . This was used by the Germans for propaganda purposes during the First World War, against which Broodcoorens fought so fiercely that he finally suffered a nervous breakdown. As a staunch socialist, he was shocked by the use of the novel for nationalist purposes. He was friends with René Magritte , whom he met while studying in Brussels and who portrayed him in 1921.
