Pierre César

Pierre César (born May 30, 1853 in Buix , Canton Bern , † October 18, 1912 in Saint-Imier , Canton Bern) was a Swiss Christian Catholic priest , writer and journalist .

Life

Pierre César was born in Buix, the son of the farmer Pierre Joseph César and Jeanne-Marie Vallatte. He attended primary school in Pruntrut and studied theology at the Christian Faculty of the University of Bern from 1875 to 1878 , where he also obtained his diploma as a secondary teacher.

He was ordained a priest on April 7, 1878. He worked from 1878 to 1884 as a Christian Catholic pastor in Charmoille and from 1884 to 1912 in Saint-Imier. He was also secretary of the school commission and a member of the examination commission of the theological faculty of the University of Bern.

On October 21, 1879, he married Marie Zahnd (1857–1939) in Bern. The children Juliette (1881–1955), Claire Rosalie Berthe (1885–1886), Joseph (1887–1945) and Marcelle (1892–1970) resulted from the marriage. Juliette married the publisher and printer Ernest Grossniklaus in Saint-Imier, Marcelle married the postman Georges Robert-Charrue in Saint-Imier. Joseph César became a lawyer in Bern. He reached the military grade of colonel. He was the grandfather of the Swiss international lawyer Denise Marcelle Bindschedler-Robert (1920–2008).

Thanks to the efforts of César, the new church was built in Saint-Imier, which was consecrated in 1912 and characterizes the townscape.

Journalistic activity

Pierre César also worked as a journalist in French and German. Among other things, he wrote for the Jura Bernois , for the Parisian Le Figaro , for the Etoile belge and the Indépendance belge .

Literary work

He created a literary work under his name and the pseudonyms Jean Roll, Pierre Desbuys and G. Ducoeur. His stories have been published both as serial novels in the daily newspapers and in book form.

estate

In 2011, the Rudolf G. Bindschedler Family Foundation donated the estate of Pierre César to the Bern Burger Library . In mid-June 2020, the Rudolf Gottfried Bindschedler Family Foundation published Erika Moser's master’s thesis: free equal solidarity - Pierre César (1852-1912) , which is dedicated to the life, work and work of Pierre César.
