Pierre Chuvin

Pierre Chuvin (born July 18, 1943 in Saint-Angel , Allier , † December 26, 2016 in Paris ) was a French Graecist and historian who specialized in ancient Greece and the contemporary Orient .

Life

After studying at the University of Clermont-Ferrand and at the École nationale des langues orientales vivantes , where he learned modern Greek and Turkish, and the agrégation in classical literature (Greek, Latin and French, 1966), Chuvin was given a thèse on the late antique poet Nonnos von Panopolis in Greek literature with Francis Vian as Docteur d'État. He received a professor in Clermont-Ferrand and switched to the University of Paris X (Nanterre) in 1998 . In 1993 he founded the Institut français d'études sur l'Asie centrale in Tashkent ( Uzbekistan ) and headed it until 1998. He also founded the magazine Les Cahiers de l'Asie centrale . From 2003 to 2008 he was director of the Institut français d'études anatoliennes in Istanbul. After returning to Paris, he taught at the University of Paris X (Nanterre) until his retirement in 2011. Since 1984 he has also been a member of the editorial team of L'Histoire magazine .

Pierre Chuvin was married to Huguette Meunier-Chuvin .
