Pierre Louis Ginguené (born April 25, 1748 in Rennes , † November 16, 1816 in Paris ) was a French literary historian, critic and diplomat.

Pierre Louis Ginguené became known for his poem La confession de Zulmé and for critical articles in various magazines.

He supported the French Revolution with his sheet Feuille villageoise , which he edited from 1791–94. His moderate disposition brought him to prison in 1793, and only the fall of Maximilien de Robespierre saved his life.

He then became a member and director of the Public Education Commission and was elected to the Institut de France . At the same time he founded and edited the Décade philosophique , which later assumed the title Revue and was merged with the Mercure de France in 1807 .

In 1798 he was envoy to Turin , Piedmont , for seven months , and in 1799 a member of the tribunate , but was expelled again in 1802 because of his opposition.

His main work, a literary history of Italy ( Histoire littéraire d'Italie , Paris 1811–24, 9 vols.), Is based on Girolamo Tiraboschi ; the last two volumes are half by Francesco Salfi , who added a tenth volume to complete the work up to the 17th century.
