Pierre Nicole (born May 20, 1909 in Basel , † June 27, 1987 in Geneva ) was a Swiss journalist and politician.

Life

Pierre Nicole was the son of Léon Nicole , who at that time was still an official in the post and telegraph administration, and his wife Lina, daughter of the farmer Louis Dubrit. After studying law , he became a journalist and was an active socialist in the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent for the newspaper Le Travail , whose father was his founder and editor . Together with his father, he moved in a clandestine political environment, which led to the fact that they were both sentenced for secret political activities in August 1943 and were imprisoned for three weeks.

From 1945 Pierre Nicole was a member of the Labor Party (PdA), which had been founded in 1944 as the successor organization of the Communist Party of Switzerland (KPS) and the Fédération socialiste suisse (FSS), which was banned between 1939 and 1941 and whose president was his father; at the same time he was also editor of the newspaper La Voix ouvrière , which was the official organ of the PdA. In an article from March 2, 1951, he accused the Federal Council of deceiving the people and of wanting to involve Switzerland in the war against the Soviet Union . This resulted in an unconditional 15 month prison term, to which he was sentenced in December 1951 and which he also served in full.

He supported his father , who was loyal to Stalin, after his expulsion from the PdA because of differences of opinion and founded a progressive party with him in 1954 , which was dissolved again in 1958; then he withdrew from political life.

Pierre Nicole married Camille in 1939, daughter of Walther Lienhard, journalist and board member of Société générale d'édition et de publicité .
