Pierre de Canillac († probably 1361) was a French bishop. He was Abbot of Montmajour , then Bishop of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, and finally Bishop of Maguelonne .

Life

family

Pierre de Canillac was without a doubt born in Canillac Castle in Gévaudan . He is the son of Baron Guillaume de Canillac and Jeanne de Deaux, sister of Cardinal Bertrand de Déaulx . His brother Raymond de Canillac was provost of the cathedral chapter of Maguelonne and from 1345 Archbishop of Toulouse , in 1350 finally became a cardinal. Another of Pierre's brothers, Pons de Canillac, was Abbot of Aniane . Since his eldest (and secular) brother Marquis left no son but three daughters, the Canillac's property passed into the hands of Guillaume II. Roger (brother of Pope Clement VI ) after the marriage of their daughter Guerine, and thus to the house Rogier de Beaufort over.

A great cousin of Pierre de Canillacs, Déodat de Canillac, whose branch of the family lived in Saint-Urcize in the diocese of Saint-Flour , succeeded him as Bishop of Maguelonne.

career

Pierre de Canillac became abbot of Montmajour in 1348. He had the watchtower built in Fontvieille , called the "Tour de Canillac" (and probably completed under his successor Jaubert de Livron) to protect the abbey from the powerful lords of Les Baux .

He was abbot until 1353, when he became bishop of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières. In 1361 he became Bishop of Manguelonne and died that same year.
