Piers Edgcumbe, 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe
Piers Alexander Hamilton Edgcumbe, 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ( July 2, 1865 - April 18, 1944 ) was a British nobleman and politician.
Origin and youth
Piers Edgcumbe was the only son of William Edgcumbe, 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and his first wife Katherine Hamilton. He studied in Oxford .
Service as an officer
Edgcumbe became an officer in the 3rd Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry , a militia unit . On March 23, 1891 he was promoted to captain. From 1899 to early 1902 he served during the Boer War in South Africa. He served as an officer again during World War I but remained in Britain as Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of the 3rd Battalion. After the First World War he finished his army service and was made an honorary colonel.
Earl of Mount Edgcumbe
After his father's death in 1917, Edgcumbe had inherited the family estates and the title of Earl of Mount Edgcumbe . He became a member of the House of Lords , served as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall and Devon . He made the park of his Mount Edgcumbe estate open to the public once a week. In view of the lack of a social system, he paid his servants a pension in retirement, offered them accommodation in retirement and supported employees who were unable to work due to an accident at work. When Mount Edgcumbe House was destroyed by a German bombing raid in April 1941, he moved to the old Cotehele family home , which he had previously used frequently.
Marriage and inheritance
Edgcumbe had married Edith Villiers (1879-1935) on May 15, 1911 , a daughter of the 5th Earl of Clarendon . The marriage remained childless, so that after his death his great cousin Kenelm Edgcumbe inherited the title.
