Provinces :

The National Highway 1 is (NH 1) one of eight national highways in Cambodia and part of the Asian Highways 1 (AH 1) . The road forms an east-west connection in the southeast of the country, from the capital Phnom Penh to the border with Vietnam near Bavet . The road is about 160 kilometers long.

Street description

The NH 1 begins in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia with around 2 million inhabitants. Here he crosses National Highway 2, which leads south. The road crosses the Bassac River via a double bridge. There is a three-lane section here, the rest of the route is single-lane. The NH 1 then runs southeast and parallel to the Mekong . At Neak Loeang he crosses the Mekong over the Tsubasa Bridge .

The second part goes through the plains of south-eastern Cambodia. The route is mainly lined with smaller villages with the exception of the small town of Svay Rieng . After the place Bavet follows the border with Vietnam. There are a couple of large casinos on the Cambodian side and the border facilities are quite extensive. On the Vietnamese side, the QL22 continues to Ho Chi Minh City .

history

The National Highway 1 was built at the time of the French colonial era and is an important connection from Phnom Penh to Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). The road was largely destroyed by carpet bombing during the wars of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, which also caused great damage in Cambodia. In 1981 they started to repair the road in the Vietnamese border area.

Mekong bridge

In February 2011, construction of the Tsubasa Bridge over the Mekong River in Neak Loeang began. The bridge cost $ 131 million and was funded by Japan. It has a length of 2215 meters and was opened on April 6, 2015.

future

The National Highway 1 is narrow and slowly passable in only a few places. In recent years the eastern part has been widened with extra lanes for slow traffic. The part between the Mekong and Bavet has not yet been expanded.

Phnom Penh - Ho Chi Minh City Expressway

There are plans for an expressway from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The part in Cambodia is 170 kilometers long and is to be implemented in three phases. It is planned to open the first part by mid-2020 and to complete the motorway in 2030.
