Piet Bakers (1951)

Pieter "Piet" Bakers (born September 5, 1922 in Eindhoven , Netherlands , † August 14, 1998 ) was a Dutch football player .

After the early death of his father, Bakers had to work for Philips at the age of twelve . After playing at Velocitas in his youth , he joined the Philips factory team PSV Eindhoven at the age of 18 . He made his first games in the first team in the 1942/43 season, a year later he was already a regular as a right defender . After a 14-month break due to a broken leg, he came back to the team in 1947. In the following season he tried his hand at the position of the center forward - quite successfully with ten goals this season. But he returned to his regular position in defense, where he also played when PSV won the KNVB Cup in 1950 and the championship a year later. Bakers remained a total of 13 seasons with PSV until 1955 and scored eleven goals in 180 games for Eindhoven. After an ankle injury in 1953, however, he was rarely used and at the age of 32 he moved to Holland Sport in The Hague.

After PSV's successes in 1950/51 Bakers was part of the Dutch national team in 1951 and 1952 , but only played once: In the 4-4 draw against Finland in Rotterdam , he had his only appearance in Oranje on October 27, 1951 ; half a year later he was only on the bench in the match against Belgium in Antwerp .

After his active career, Bakers returned to PSV Eindhoven, where he headed the youth department for 20 years.
