Pieter Huys: De Hel

Pieter Huys (also Peeter Huijs), * around 1519/20; † 1581/84 in Antwerp , was a Flemish Renaissance painter and is assigned to Northern Mannerism .

life and work

Pieter Huys becomes a Flemish group with the painters Jan Wellens de Cock (around 1475/80? - before 1529), Herri met de Bles (around 1500/10 - after 1555) and Jan Mandyn (around 1500/02 - 1559/60) Associated with painters in Antwerp who, as imitators of Hieronymus Bosch (around 1450/60 - 1516), continued the tradition of fantastic painting and thus established a northern mannerism (in contrast to Italian). Pieter Huys was since 1545 active in Antwerp, where he joined the printing workshop of Hieronymus Cock (around 1510-1570) joined and a free master of the Guild of St. Luke was; further details from his biography are not known. As with the other painters in the group of Bosch imitators, one of Huys' favorite subjects was that of the temptation of Saint Anthony ; he is considered the next successor to Hieronymus Bosch. Only a few signed and dated works by Huys are known to be certain. Many ascriptions lack a secure basis.
