Jan Wellens de Cock (also: Jan de Cock; * around 1475/80; † 1527/28 in Antwerp ) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and is assigned to Northern Mannerism . His origin and identity are unclear, perhaps he is identical to a Jan van Leyen who settled in Antwerp in 1503.

life and work

Jan Wellens de Cock becomes a Flemish group with the painters Pieter Huys (around 1519 / 20–1581 / 84), Herri met de Bles (around 1500/10 - after 1555) and Jan Mandyn (around 1500 / 02–1559 / 60) Associated with painters in Antwerp who, as imitators of Hieronymus Bosch (around 1450 / 60–1516), continued the tradition of fantastic painting and thus established a northern mannerism (as opposed to Italian mannerism). De Cock became master in the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1506 and its dean in 1520. Puyvelde only grants him a single secure work, a landscape with Saint Christopher ! Many attributions, especially the Antonius Trials, lack a secure basis and are assigned to different painters in the history of art, including Cornelis and Pieter Cornelisz. or Aertgen van Leyden. De Cock's sons, Hieronymus (around 1510–1570) and Matthys (around 1509–1548), took over the workshop and founded a famous art publisher and printer in Antwerp, where, among other things, the drawings and engravings by Pieter Brueghel (around 1525 / 30–1569 ) to be spread.
