Jan Mandyn (also: Jan Mandijn, * around 1500/02 in Haarlem ; † 1559/60 in Antwerp ) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and is assigned to Northern Mannerism .

life and work

Jan Mandyn becomes a Flemish group with the painters Pieter Huys (around 1519/20 - 1581/84), Herri met de Bles (around 1500/10 - after 1555) and Jan Wellens de Cock (around 1475/80 - 1527/28) Associated with painters in Antwerp who, as imitators of Hieronymus Bosch (around 1450/60 - 1516), continued the tradition of fantastic painting and thus established a northern mannerism (as opposed to Italian mannerism). With his demonic haunted images, Jan Mandyn follows on from Bosch's art. The basic compositions are closely based on Bosch; Mandyn does not achieve the mastery of his role model in the color design of his paintings.

Many ascriptions to Jan Mandyn are unfounded; only the Trial of Anthony in Haarlem is definitely assigned to Mandyn. Allegedly Mandyn should have been illiterate, which is why the signature on the work in Gothic script should not be from him; it is quite possible that if he was actually not able to write, he could have copied the lettering from a template.

Jan Mandyn is most likely from Haarlem, but he settled as a master in Antwerp as early as 1530, where he also trained students, including Gillis Mostaert (1534–1598) and Bartholomäus Spranger (1545–1611).

You bring him together with the Master of Paul and Barnabas .
