Pieter Jozef Verhaghen (born March 19, 1728 in Aarschot , † April 3, 1811 in Leuven ) was a Flemish painter .

life and work

Verhaghen had great success with his paintings during his lifetime. In 1770 Maria Theresa of Austria granted him an annual grant of 1,400 guilders so that he could travel to Italy to study the works of the old masters. During his absence, his wife received 1,000 guilders a year for her maintenance and the care of the children. Verhaghen began the journey in 1771 with his eldest son, studied the most important collections in Paris and then spent two years in Italy, where he reworked a large number of masterpieces. On his return trip he was in Viennareceived by Maria Theresa, to whom he presented a painting of St. Theresa, which was graciously accepted. In October 1773, Verhaghen returned to Leuven and was warmly received; even a banquet was held in his honor in the town hall.

Verhaghen was also a very productive painter in the period that followed. On May 6, 1784, the Governors General Marie Christine of Austria and Albert Kasimir von Sachsen-Teschen paid him a visit in his studio .

Today his works can be seen in numerous museums inside and outside Belgium. His painting "Jesus on the Mount of Olives" hangs in the Sint Kwintenkirche in Leuven. Several of his works hang in the church of Sint Pieter in Leuven. Works by him can also be found in the church of Averbode Abbey .

His older brother Jan Jozef was also a successful painter.

The grave of Pieter Jozef Verhaghen is in the cemetery of the Sint Martinuskirche in Wilsele (today part of the municipality of Löwen).
