The M - Museum Leuven (also M Museum or just M ) is an art museum in the Belgian city of Leuven . It offers an overview of the art of Leuven and Brabant from the Middle Ages to the present day .

history

The beginnings of the M Museum lie in a cabinet of curiosities , with whose exhibits a museum was set up in the town hall of Leuven in 1823 . About a hundred years later, it was moved to the former residence of Mayor Leopold Vander Kelen as the " Vander Kelen-Mertens Community Museum" . In 2009, a new building by Stéphane Beel Architects was opened at this location in Leopold Vanderkelenstraat , which integrates several old and new buildings into the museum complex. Since then the institution has officially been called " M - Museum Leuven ".

collection

On the one hand, the collection includes the church treasure of Sint Pieter , which can be viewed in the church and is an example of the Brabant high Gothic of the 15th century. The art collection in the main building again consists of two main components, on the one hand late Gothic paintings and sculptures , for example by Jan Rombouts I , Josse van der Baren , Rogier van der Weyden and Dierick Bouts , on the other hand Flemish masters of the 19th century such as Constantin Meunier , Jef Lambeaux and George Minne .
