Josse van der Baren (also with the first name Joost and Jodocus ; * between 1540 and 1560 in Leuven ; † between 1604 and 1624 there ) was a Flemish painter of historical paintings and draftsman who worked in the area around Leuven at the end of the 16th and beginning was active in the 17th century.

Life

Josse van der Baren was born in Leuven and died there. It is not known who trained him or whether he visited Italy, although his work was clearly influenced by Italian art. He was mainly active in the Leuven region, which is why most of his work is still there today.

The martyrdom of St. Dorothea , middle picture.

Van der Baren was an active member of the Löwener Rederijkers , who were responsible for the production of several theatrical productions. His brother held the leadership position of the prince of the local rhetoric chamber De Roos ( The Rose ). Josse van der Baren himself was a friend of Justus Lipsius (1547–1606), the important philologist and humanist who lived and taught in Leuven. Lipsius wrote the epitaph on the tombstone of van der Baren's five-year-old son, who died in 1605.

painting

Josse van der Baren mainly painted religious altar paintings on wood. Some of his works have been preserved around and in Leuven, including in the Saint Peter Church , the Park Abbey in Heverlee and in the Saint Laurentius Church in Veltem . During this time, numerous Flemish artists such as Michiel Coxcie and Frans Floris painted in an Italianized style; van der Baren's work has also been clearly influenced by this movement.

The St. Ivo Triptych, middle picture

His masterpiece is the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian ( M - Museum Leuven ). Originally it was a triptych, of which only the middle picture has survived.

Other works by his hand are the Martyrdom of St. Dorothea and the St. Ivo Triptych , both painted for St. Peter's Church in Leuven. The Martyrdom of Saint Dorothea was commissioned by the local Rederijkerskammer De Roos for their chapel in St. Peter's Church in Leuven. Saint Dorothea of Caesarea was the patron saint of the De Roos Rederijkerskammer , as roses play an important role in this legend of saints. The frontal view of the triptych shows the martyrdom of Saint Dorothea in a style reminiscent of Michiel Coxie. The paintings on the movable side elements reveal van der Baren's originality. They show architectural frames with cutouts from lions as well as decorative frames with rose garlands. Two poems are painted as trompe-l'oeils on illusionistic sheets of paper. The St. Ivo Triptych was commissioned by the law faculty of the old University of Leuven . The central element depicts Saint Ivo von Kermartin as the advocate of the poor who distributes alms.

A badly damaged Mater Dolorosa , painted in grisaille , on the reverse of an element of the Virgin , which was initially attributed to the Master of Flémalle ( Städel Museum , Frankfurt am Main), is now attributed to van der Baren. The painting shows the mourning Mary with a sword piercing her heart.

drawings

Panorama from Heverlee

Van der Baren's landscape drawings formed the basis of several engravings. His panoramas of Lions and Heverlee were engraved and printed in Justus Lipsius' Lovanium , published in 1605 , a representation of the history of the Duchy of Brabant . The original panoramic drawing by Heverlee could possibly be made at the request of the aristocrat and art patron Charles III. de Croÿ , who had an extensive collection of manuscripts and important lands in Heverlee. Justus Lipsius tried to convince de Croÿ to move his library to Heverlee and to establish a humanistic academy. Lipsius asked van der Baren to draw the location of the planned academy in his panorama. The plate of the panorama of lions was engraved by Pieter van der Borcht and worked on by Theodor Galle .
