Neue Wegen was an Austrian cultural magazine that appeared between 1945 and 1984.

It was founded in 1945 by the Theater der Jugend in Vienna with the aim of imparting culture to young people under the name Theater der Jugend and gradually developed with the working group of young authors into an important publication for young literary talents. The change in meaning should also be reflected in the renaming to New Paths .

The editors-in-chief of the magazine were: Hans Zwanzger, Franz Häußler, Heinrich Neumayer, Otto Wladika and Hermann Mayer. Authors were u. a. HC Artmann , Gertrude Behringer , Erich Benedikt , Gerald Bisinger , Manfred Chobot , Erwin Chvojka , Jeannie Ebner , Elfriede Gerstl , Peter Henisch , Ernst Jandl , Elfriede Jelinek , Ernst Kein , Friederike Mayröcker , Andreas Okopenko , Karl Nahlik , Friedrich Polakovics , Rudolf Rathei, Theodor Sapper and Franz Schuh . Visual artists who can be found in the magazine are, for example, Friedensreich Hundertwasser , Käthe Kollwitz , Gerhard Langthaler , Kurt Moldovan , Ernst Schrom .

When Ernst Jandl's phonetic and spoken poems such as schtzngrmm or Ode auf N appeared for the first time in 1957 at Neue Wegen , there were voices in the public who spoke of proximity to “dirt and trash ”, of “babbling”, “stammering” and also of “tastelessness “Spoke from which young people in particular should be protected.

The poet Walter Buchebner published for the first time in the magazine .

New ways remained an entry portal for young writers until the 1970s. After that, it increasingly withdrew from literature and initially returned to its original purpose, the theater, with program articles, actor portraits, etc., until it finally became a simple program magazine.
