Pieter Muntendam

Pieter Muntendam also: Piet Muntendam (born September 22, 1901 in Amsterdam , † October 4, 1986 in The Hague ) was a Dutch physician and politician.

Life

Pieter was the son of the ophthalmologist of the same name Pieter Muntendam (born January 19, 1867 in Amsterdam; † April 23, 1927 in Bussum) and his wife, the dentist Doriena Frederika van Coevorden (born September 6, 1869 in Hollandscheveld; † June 11, 1943 in Sobibor). He attended the higher civic school in Amsterdam and from 1918 studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam . On December 10, 1924, he completed his medical exam there, became a family doctor in Hollandscheveld in 1925 and a controlling doctor in the central administration in Groningen in 1931 . On April 28, 1936, he received his doctorate from the University of Utrecht with the subject De sociale beteekenis van rheumatiek, tevens bijdrage tot de ziektewetstatistiek (German: The social significance of rheumatism, also a contribution to sickness statistics ) as a doctor of medicine. In 1937 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in social medicine at the University of Groningen , in 1938 became the state inspector for public health for Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe and in 1940 lecturer in social medicine at the Groningen University.

In 1945 he worked as a medical advisor to the central administration in Amsterdam, he joined the Labor Party (PvdA) in 1946 and was appointed General Director of Public Health at the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs in 1949. In 1950 he became State Secretary for Social Affairs, first in the Drees / Van Schaik cabinet , in 1951 in the Drees I cabinet and from 1952 in the Drees II cabinet . On January 30, 1953, Muntendam was appointed associate professor for hygiene and social medicine at the University of Leiden . He took it over on October 2 of the same year with the inaugural lecture De bijdrage van de arts aan de bevordering van de volksgezondheid (German: The doctor's contribution to the promotion of public health ). On June 4, 1964, he became a full professor of hygiene and social medicine.

In the academic year 1967/68 he became rector of the Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech De Rechts van de mens (German: Human Rights) on the 393rd anniversary of the Leiden University, on February 8, 1968 . In 1966 he switched to a special professorship and became a member and chairman of the curators of Leiden and other governing institutions. On September 1, 1972, he retired and on September 11 of the same year gave his farewell lecture Weg geëffend (German: Weg paved). After his tenure as a professor, he became chairman of the Dutch Association for Voluntary Euthanasia in 1974 and served on the ministerial commission for general health from 1977 to 1981. As a pioneer of social medicine in the Netherlands, Muntendam was made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1954 and Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1964 .

Muntendam married on March 31, 1925 in Amsterdam Hermine Jeanne de Vries (born December 16, 1901 in Amsterdam), the daughter of the teacher Jan de Vries (born December 28, 1857 in Wildervank, † May 5, 1929 in Arnhem) and his wife Harmina Roelfsema (born November 6, 1861 in Oosterdiep, † June 26, 1945 in Haren). There are four sons from the marriage. From the children we know:

  • Jan Muntendam (* 1931) married to Marie Anne de Fremery
  • D. Muntendam married Jacqueline Aleida Schreuder in June 1959 in Haren
