Peeter Neeffs the Elder (born around 1578 in Antwerp ; died around 1659 there ) was a Flemish painter .

Life

Neeffs is said to have been a student of the architectural painter Hendrick van Steenwyck the Elder , has been active as a painter since 1605 and was accepted as a freelancer in the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1609 , where he has worked since then and still lived in 1655.

Neeffs signed Nefs, Neffs, Neeffs and Neefs. His numerous pictures in the Louvre in Paris, in the Pinakothek in Munich, in the Museum in Gent, in the Gallery in Dresden and others, mostly interior views of churches, the darkness of which is illuminated by torches and candles, are excellent in the air and Line perspective as well as in the light effects. The treatment is very fine and clean, but not without harshness. Frans Francken , Teniers , Pieter Bruegel and Theodor van Thulden often painted the staffage for him . Many works by him have come down to us.

His son Peeter Neeffs (the Younger) (approx. 1620 - approx. 1675), a pupil of Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger , flourished around 1650–60 and painted in the same way. His paintings are difficult to distinguish from those of his father.
