Pietro Alessandro Banfi

Pietro Alessandro di Santa Margherita Banfi OCD , baptismal name Giovanni Battista Banfi (born December 7, 1739 in Milan , † November 13, 1817 in Tivoli ) was an Italian religious and bishop of Tivoli .

Life

Giovanni Battista Banfi entered the order of the Discalced Carmelites and took the religious name Pietro Alessandro di Santa Margherita . He made his profession at the age of 17 on September 26, 1756 in Milan. After graduating from the college in Parma, he became a theology lecturer and met Luigi Barnaba Niccolò Maria Chiaramonti , who later became Pope Pius VII, who was also theology lecturer and librarian at the Benedictine Abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista there at the time. Pietro Alessandro Banfi became prior of the convent in Milan, later rector of the convent of San Pancrazio fuori le mura in Rome. In 1791 he was General Procurator of his order and was confirmed as such in 1797. Pope Pius VII appointed him General Commissioner for the Order of the Discalced Carmelites on February 21, 1801 and in 1807 with a motu proprio the 58th Prior General of the Order.

In the course of the restoration, Pietro Alessandro Banfi became a member of the Reform Congregation on June 24, 1814. On July 22, 1816, he was appointed Bishop of Tivoli. He was ordained bishop on January 28, 1817 by Cardinal Michele Di Pietro .

Pietro Alessandro Banfi died after only 15 months in the episcopate.
