The Pillauer Tief or Pillauer Seetief is a natural lake passage named after the town of Pillau , which cuts the Fresh Spit and connects the Fresh Lagoon and the Baltic Sea by water.

history

The access to the Frischen Haff on the waterway has changed constantly in the past. This was the Lochstedter Tief in the Middle Ages, which is why Lochstedt Castle was built. But the Lochstedter Tief silted up between 1308 and 1311 as a result of a storm surge , whereupon the Alte Tief opposite the Balga Castle was created, but it also silted up again. It was impossible for larger ships to enter the lagoon and thus further to Königsberg . In 1497 a storm surge created the Pillauer Tief, 550 m long and 360 m wide. This new passage through the Fresh Spit between Fresh Lagoon and the Baltic Sea was now passable again for the cogs of the Hanseatic League . In 1626 the passage was secured with the fortress Pillau . In 1890, the Königsberger See Canal (now the Kaliningrad Maritime Canal ) was built, which means that ships can still call at Kaliningrad ( Königsberg ) without any problems .
