Pinch hitter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A pinch hitter , abbreviated to PH (German: Substitute batter ), is a reserve player in baseball who is not divided into the hit sequence from the start , but replaces a teammate who, according to the sequence, would actually be the next batter.

Pinch hitters are usually brought in when they are behind, when a team has to collect their own hits rather than preventing opposing points. Pinch hitters are therefore usually stronger offensively than defensively. They're mostly reserve infielder or outfielder, as a baseball team typically doesn't use the hard-to-replace catchers or pitchers for the role. Pinch runners play a similar role, replacing teammates who are already on base.

aviation

In aviation, one speaks of a pinch hitter when a person without a flight license or type experience takes over an aircraft in an emergency to make an emergency or field landing. Special training courses are offered for this.
