mission

After the successful start, in contrast to Pioneer 0 , the engines of the second stage of the launcher switched off around ten seconds too early. So the space probe could not leave the gravitational field of the earth. Instead, it only reached a summit height of about 113,000 kilometers and later burned up in the earth's atmosphere. During its 43-hour flight, Pioneer 1 was able to transmit a few data on the nature of the Earth's outer radiation belt .
