Explorer 5 was one of the satellites of the Explorer program of NASA . It was supposed to be launched into space with a Juno I rocket on August 24, 1958 , but the launch failed because the first stage of the rocket collided with the second stage after being detached and distorted its launch angle.
After Explorer 2 , Explorer 5 was the second false start in the context of the Explorer program. After this incident, Explorer numbering was only given to satellites that reached their orbit.
