Model of a Surveyor spacecraft

Surveyor 2 was launched on 20 September 1966 aboard a Atlas - Centaur rocket from the launch pad LC-36 of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station . In contrast to the ranger missions, there is no parking orbit . This means that after separation, the probe headed straight for the moon. A course correction that had become necessary failed because one of the Vernier engines did not ignite. The probe staggered and attempts to bring it back under control failed. Surveyor 2 crashed into the Sinus Medii on the moon on September 23rd .
