Pinguicula emarginata is a carnivorous plant belonging to the genus of the fatty herbs ( Pinguicula ) in the Temnoceras section.
description
Pinguicula emarginata is a perennial plant , grows all year round and does not form a winter rosette, so it can be classified as a tropical homophyllous butterwort .
It forms a native rosette of leaves from five to sixteen elliptical to inverted egg-shaped leaves that are 10 to 50 millimeters long and 5 to 22 millimeters wide and are slightly rolled up at the edge.
On one to seven 40 to 100 millimeter long, upright and thread-like inflorescence axes sit the 10 to 16.5 mm long and 8 to 13 millimeter wide, terminal single flowers - including the spur. The calyx is two-lipped, the upper lip consists of three elongated-round to elongated-round lanceolate lobes, only fused at the base, which are 1.6 to 2.5 millimeters long and 0.5 to 0.8 millimeters wide, the lower lip two oblong-round to oblong-round lanceolate lobes that are fused in the lower third, 1.5 to 2 millimeters long and 0.3 to 0.7 millimeters wide. The crown is also two-lipped, of a white base color and with purple veins . The upper lip is significantly shorter than the lower lip, divided into two elongated-round to almost square lobes and 2 to 4 millimeters long and wide. The lower lip is three-lobed, 3.3 to 6.2 millimeters long and 2 to 5 millimeters wide, the lobes are spatula to inverted ovoid.
The plant is not self-sterile, but needs cross-pollination.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
distribution
Find is Pinguicula emarginata mainly in the area of Atzalan in the state of Veracruz (but also on vertical rock) m (Mexico) in rock crevices in 1400 height. The plant can also be found in the neighboring state of Puebla - between Teziutlan and Tlapacoyan at an altitude of approx. 1550 m in rock niches of the cloud forest .
The Mexican highlands of this area are subtropical and have a high humidity, (therefore there are also many bromeliads and orchids in this area). The plants can be found in partially shaded places and grow (often in colonies) on sandstone rocks that are only covered with a thin layer of humus or algae .
