Pinguicula moctezumae is a carnivorous plant belonging to the genus of the fatty herbs ( Pinguicula ) in the Orcheosanthus section.

description

Pinguicula moctezumae forms a rosette of leaves . The perennial, herbaceous plant can develop a winter rosette, but rarely does it because it only hibernates briefly or not at all. The trigger for hibernation seems to be a somewhat drier environment. The carnivorous "summer" leaves form a leaf rosette with up to 15 leaves. The lanceolate leaves are up to 10 cm long and 1 cm wide.

The dark pink colored flower is about 30 to 35 mm in diameter and has a long flower spur typical of the section. The seeds ripen in about a month and are elongated in shape. Due to the small size of 1 mm, the spherical (about 5 mm large) capsule fruit fits well over 100 seeds, which are scattered after the seed capsule has opened.

distribution

Pinguicula moctezumae can be found - as the name suggests - in the canyon of the Río Moctezuma , which forms the borders of the Mexican states of Hidalgo and Querétaro . It grows on damp limestone cliffs at an altitude of 900 to 1100 m above sea level.

Hybrids

In July 1998 Jan Flísek cross-pollinated between Pinguicula agnata and Pinguicula moctezumae . From the constellation Pinguicula moctezumae as father and Pingucula agnata the culture hybrid Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' emerged.
