Pink Martini
Pink Martini is a twelve-piece American band from Portland , Oregon .
history
The musicians were brought together in 1994 by Thomas M. Lauderdale . In 1997 her first album Sympathique was released on her own label Heinz Records . Over 650,000 units were sold worldwide, individual pieces were decoupled and found their place on various compilations such as Buddha Bar . The album is very much based on the music of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, but fits well into the modern easy-listening and bar music scene. The best-known track on this album is Sympathique (“je ne veux pas travailler…”). After their European debut at the Cannes Film Festival , the band went on an extensive tour around the world.
Her second album Hang On Little Tomato was released in October 2004. The concert with the presentation of the new CD sold out in no time and Pink Martini decided to play a second presentation show.
In contrast to the first album, where singer China Forbes only sang on a few numbers, she is the main voice in the second album. In addition, Sympathique consists mostly of covered pieces, while Hang On Little Tomato consists entirely of original compositions by Lauderdale and Forbes. China Forbes paused for about a year from mid-2011 because of vocal cord surgery.
After her return, she reduced her appearances with Pink Martini and shared the role of lead singer with Storm Large , who had represented her during her illness break. In 2013, Large's singing was enthusiastically received by the audience during a tour in Germany .
The group's drummer, Derek Rieth, committed in August 2014 suicide .
Pink Martini pieces can also be heard more often in films and series such as The Sopranos .
“Pink Martini is a boisterous, once-around-the-world adventure. […] If the United Nations had had a house band in 1962, we would hopefully have been that band. "
