Pinta , English Abingdon Island , is one of the Galápagos Islands . It was named after the Pinta , one of Columbus ' ships , and has an area of about 59 km². The highest point on the island is about 777 meters above sea level.
Lonesome George , one of the most famous tortoises in the Galapagos Islands, lived on the island until he was relocated to the Charles Darwin Station on Santa Cruz . Lonesome George, probably the last turtle of the subspecies Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni , died there in 2012 at the age of about 100 years.
Pinta is the northernmost of the active volcanic islands of the Galapagos, it is a shield volcano . Among other things, fork-tailed gulls , marine iguanas and Galápagos fur seals live on it .
