Pinta is a free image editing program for the Windows , macOS and Linux operating systems . The appearance and operation of Pinta are strongly based on the freeware program Paint.NET . Compared to GIMP , Pinta is lighter in weight, easier to use and has fewer features. Pinta is implemented in the C # programming language and uses the GTK + GUI toolkit and the Cairo graphics library . Parts of the source code , especially the code for image adjustment and filters, come from Paint.NET.

The idea for the program came from Novell employee Jonathan Pobst.

Range of functions

Pinta is a raster graphics editor with the usual functions of image processing including drawing functions, filters and tools for color correction.

The main usability features include:

  • Undo function ( undo ) without restriction,
  • multilingual user interface,
  • Customizable toolbars that can also be disconnected as separate windows.

In contrast to some other, simpler graphics programs, Pinta supports working with several image layers .

history

Pinta development began in February 2010 and was led by Jonathan Pobst, who was then at Novell . In September 2011, Pobst announced that he was no longer interested in developing Pinta. A new development team continued the project and is actively developing the software. Now in 2018, the further development appears to have come to a standstill.
