Philipp August Gotthold Sabel comes from a pastor's family in Baden. His grandfather Johann Philipp Sabel worked as dean in Heidelberg, his father Ludwig Adolf Sabel as a pastor in his birthplace Waldangelloch (Großherzoglich-Badisches Bezirksamt Bretten ). After graduating from high school in Stuttgart in 1872, Sabel studied Protestant theology at the University of Erlangen until 1876 . After working as vicar in Kleinheubach , he entered the service of the Bavarian regional church in 1878 at his own request to the responsible consistory . He received Bavarian citizenship in 1879 and subsequently worked as a parish administrator in Amberg and Vohenstrauß . After successfully passing the employment examination, the Kgl. Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior for Church and School Affairs took on the role of Protestant religion teacher in the teacher training institute and the royal college in Bamberg . From 1890, Sabel also taught at the newly founded New High School there . In 1907/1908 he was promoted to the Royal Bavarian Council of Churches . On February 11, 1909, Sabel died of a stroke.

Sabel acquired his knowledge of heraldry in self-study. "The [...] work [...] is characterized by a precise gift of observation, careful interpretation of the color scheme, and an astute interpretation of the meaning of the coats of arms." Sabel's most important work is the design of the coats of arms on and in Melanchthon House (Bretten) . After his designs the coat of arms on the facade, the life stations are Philipp Melanchthon symbolize ( Bretten , Pforzheim , Heidelberg , Tübingen , Wittenberg ), and the coat of arms on the gallery oriel windows, which for the dominions Palatinate , Baden , Elector of Saxony and Prussia are , designed. In the so-called city room he designed the 121 city coats of arms, which stand for the cities with which Melanchthon corresponded. On October 19, 1903, Sabel was made Knight First Class of the Zähringer Lion Order by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden . The date of the award of the medal and the opening ceremonies of the Melanchthon House from October 19 to 21, 1903 are obviously connected.

Due to the occupation with the heraldry it was obvious that Sabel also found interest in the seal customer. Among other things, he dealt with the history of the city seals of Zerbst , Ettlingen and Pforzheim .

Also worth mentioning is the design of a coat of arms for the Wingolfsbund , which was adopted by them in 1884 as the federal coat of arms and is still in use today. In Bamberg , where Sabel lived and died for 20 years, he not only tried to preserve a large number of coats of arms, but also dealt in particular with the coats of arms of the city and diocese of Bamberg. His designs and seal collection were acquired by the Bamberg Historical Association after his death . They are accessible in the city archives and the Bamberg State Library .
