Pinus luzmariae is a conifer from the genus of the pines ( Pinus ) with needles that usually grow in threes. The species is similar to Pinus oocarpa , to which it is often attributed. In the Red List of the IUCN , they will be deemed not at risk.

description

Pinus Luzmariae grows as evergreen , 10 to 15 meter high tree . The trunk reaches chest height diameters of 40 to 60 centimeters. The needles grow in threes and rarely in groups of four in a needle sheath. They are stiff, rarely from 11, usually 14 to 17 and sometimes up to 20 centimeters long and 1.2 to 1.6 millimeters wide. The seed cones are open 3 to 5.5 centimeters long with a diameter of 3 to 5, rarely up to 6 centimeters.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range of Pinus luzmariae is in Mexico and in Honduras. The largest stocks are in the southern Sierra Madre Occidental in the state of Durango with about 1000 hectares and another in the north of Jalisco with 600 hectares. In both areas there are open forests on rocky ground. Climatic conditions and associated tree types are similar to those of Pinus oocarpa . The climate in the distribution area is temperate to mild with sometimes tropical influence. On stony ground you can find Pinus luzmariae together with Pinus lumholtzii and Pinus engelmannii and various oak species such as Quercus magnoliifolia , Quercus resinosa , Quercus crassifolia and Quercus coccolobifolia . On deeper soils, it grows together with the oaks Quercus viminea and Quercus fulva and the strawberry tree Arbutus tessellata .

Hazard and protection

In the Red List of the IUCN is Pinus Luzmariae be deemed not at risk ( "Least Concern"). The species is possibly endangered due to the low reproduction rate due to the low number of fertile seeds, only about one to five per cone. One reason for this could be the release of pollen in June and July, when the frequent rains make pollination difficult. Fire and illegal cutting of trees are further dangers.

Systematics and Etymology

Pinus luzmariae is a species from the genus of the pines ( Pinus ), in which it is assigned to the subgenus Pinus , Section Trifoliae , Subsection Australes . The taxon was named Pinus oocarpa f. In 1945 by Maximino Martínez . trifoliata , and therefore only classified as a form of Pinus oocarpa . In 1948 he introduced it to Pinus oocarpa as the variety Pinus oocarpa var. Trifoliata . Jorge Pérez de la Rosa also succeeded in working out other distinguishing features to Pinus oocarpa than the number of needles per needle sheath and described the taxon in 1998 as a separate species Pinus luzmariae . The specific epithet luzmariae is reminiscent of Pérez de la Rosa's village school teacher Luz Maria Villareal de Puga. The scattered occurrence of the taxon in a large part of Mexico and also outside of Mexico in areas where Pinus oocarpa occurs speaks against the classification as a separate species . However, there is no evidence, such as genetic testing, to make a final assessment. Some authors, according to James E. Eckenwalder, do not recognize the taxon as a separate taxon, but see the name Pinus oocarpa var. Trifoliata only as a synonym for Pinus oocarpa .

use

There is no information on the use of the species, but it is likely to be used in a similar way to Pinus oocarpa .
