Needles and tenons

Vegetative characteristics

Pinus engelmannii is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of 20 to 30 meters and trunk diameters of 35 to 80 centimeters. The bark is dark brown and cracked. The treetop is loose beastet.

The dark green needles are in bundles of three, sometimes in bundles of two or five. The needles are 20 to 40 centimeters long; this makes Pinus engelmannii one of the pine species with the longest needles.

Generative characteristics

The cones are egg-shaped with a length of 8 to 16 centimeters and often asymmetrical at their base. The cover scales are tight fitting. Immature cones are green to purple-brown, mature cones are brown.

distribution

Pinus engelmannii occurs only in northern Mexico in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range and adjacent in the southernmost part of the US states of New Mexico and Arizona .

Systematics

The first publication of this species took place in 1848 under the name Pinus macrophylla by George Engelmann in Friedrich Adolph Wislizenus : Memoir of a Tour to Northern Mexico: connected with Col. Doniphan's Expedition in 1846 and 1847 , page 103. This name is invalid because John Lindley already 1839 Pinus macrophylla (a synonym of Pinus devoniana Lindl. ) Had validly published. Therefore, in 1854, this species was first described as Pinus engelmannii Carrière by Élie-Abel Carrière in Revue Horticole (Paris) , volume 3, page 227. The specific epithet engelmannii honors the American botanist of German descent George Engelmann. Other synonyms for Pinus engelmannii Carrière are: Pinus apacheca Lemmon , Pinus latifolia Sarg. , Pinus mayriana Sudw. , Pinus mayriana var. Apacheca (Lemmon) Lemmon , Pinus macrophylla var. Blancoi Martínez , Pinus ponderosa var. Macrophylla (Engelm.) Shaw , Pinus ponderosa var. Mayriana (Sudw.) Coffin. , Pinus engelmannii var. Blancoi (Martínez) Martínez .
