Piper Eressea Kerman (born September 28, 1969 in Boston ) is an American author . She was best known for her memoirs about her experiences in prison , which were filmed in the dramedy series Orange Is the New Black .

Life

Kerman grew up in a distinguished Boston family, many of whom worked as doctors, lawyers, and teachers. In 1992 she graduated from Smith College .

In 1993 she began a love affair with Catherine Cleary Wolters, who was dealing in heroin for a West African drug lord . Piper Kerman smuggled money into other countries. She was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 1998 for drug and money smuggling . She began her sentence in 2004 and was held for 13 months in Danbury Federal Prison, a minimum security prison.

In 2010, she published her bestseller , Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison , in which she shared her experiences in a women's prison. The story was filmed by Jenji Kohan for Netflix as a web series under the name Orange Is the New Black . The actress Taylor Schilling plays Piper Kerman in it. The series was nominated in five categories at the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards , including Best Comedy Series .

Kerman is bisexual and has only entered into lesbian relationships for a long time . On May 21, 2006, she married her first boyfriend, the writer Larry Smith .
