The former Hotel Piqueurhof (since 2012: Hotel am Schloss ) is a listed building in the East Frisian district town of Aurich (today: Aurich district , Lower Saxony ). It has the address Bahnhofstrasse 1. The new owners had the listed neoclassical building, which they had previously acquired in a foreclosure auction, extensively renovated in 2013.

history

In the 12th century there was a ruling base of the Oldenburg counts on the property . The chiefs from the Tom Brok family expanded this into a castle in the form of a multi-storey brick residential tower in the style of a Frisian stone house around 1380 . This castle was taken over by Focko Ukena , who was victorious in the Battle of the Wild Fields , with the dominion of tom Brok. From then on, his son Udo and his wife Hima Itzinga from the north lived in the stone house. Around 1430 the opponents of Focko Ukenas, united in the Freedom League of the Seven East Friesland under the leadership of the chief dynasty of the Cirksena, razed the castle in the struggle for supremacy in East Friesland. Today nothing is left of her. During excavations in 1986, the remains of trenches, masonry, stone paving and a layer of fire containing iron equipment and slag were found.

The Cirksena succeeded the Ukenas. They used the vacant property for commercial purposes. Princess Christine Charlotte founded an "institute for butter and cheese preparation" on the square in 1682. She left the management to a Dutchman . Prince Georg Albrecht had two large barns built in the Gulf house style from 1710 to 1713 , the hay barn and the peat barn . Behind the latter were the chicken coop and the kitchen garden of the castle. Between the two was a riding house with a stable, the so-called Pikierhof . It takes its name from the pikemen who once formed the castle guard . Another theory assumes that the name comes from the picors (French piqueurs ) stationed on the site . That was the name of the mounted hunters of the ruling house with pack of dogs.

After East Frisia fell to Prussia , the new rulers no longer had any use for the area. They sold the peat barn and the property for 1510  Reichstaler to the citizen of Aurich, Jannes Meyer. He converted the building into a two-storey residential and guest house, in which he opened the inn on the Pikierhof .

In 1884 a fire completely destroyed the building. The builder Johann Wempe then rebuilt it in the style of neoclassicism. After changes and extensions, the Hotel Piqueurhof developed from this . It extends over six properties, has two halls, 40 rooms (two suites, 14 single rooms and 24 double rooms), a swimming pool and a bowling alley.

In 2000, an Aurich group of companies bought the hotel, which had previously been privately owned. At the beginning of 2011, the managing director of the Aurich group of companies filed for bankruptcy. The Piqueurhof was then foreclosed. Two entrepreneurs from the neighboring community of Großefehn were awarded the contract . However, the insolvent group of companies had the brand name Piqueurhof protected in word and image on July 6, 2012 , so that the owners had to rename the house. They have been running it since then under the name Hotel am Schloss .
