Piranha Records - founded as "Piranha Musik" - is the music label of the independent Piranha Musikverlag based in Berlin and one of five departments of Piranha Arts. The record company operates internationally and primarily produces and publishes music by blacks, Jews and Gypsies from the field of tension between tradition, globalization and subcultural innovation. The company's special focus is on the development and international introduction of new artists.

history

Piranha Musik was founded in 1987 in West Berlin shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall by nightclub owner Brigitte Bieg, ethnologist Christoph Borkowsky and others as part of Piranha Kultur & Medien. The company's first official activity was a concert with Rufus Thomas on January 27, 1987 in the Metropol on Berlin's Nollendorfplatz . The label's first contract artist was the Zimbabwean mbira player Stella Chiweshe , first release PIR1 “Beat! Apartheid ”, a sampler in support of the fight against apartheid in South Africa.

As of 2017, Piranha Musikverlag holds over 1,200 cogyrights. Piranha Records looks back on more than 150 releases - many of them originated over the years in connection with the world music festival Heimatklänge , which Piranha Kultur organized from 1988 to 2006 in Berlin.

Other departments of Piranha Arts in addition to Piranha Records are the international World Music Expo WOMEX since 1994, the international classical music fair Classical: NEXT and Piranha Consult since 2012, and the Berlin Carnival of Cultures since 2016.

Piranha Records releases a wide variety of genres including Traditional , TradiModern, Classical , Hip-Hop and Electro . Titles from the Piranha Music catalog have appeared in international films (e.g. Sean Penn's The Pledge , starring Jack Nicholson, 2001) and global advertisements from IKEA , Guinness and Microsoft . Piranha artists became a a. with the prize of the German Record Critics , the BBC World Music Awards awarded and numerous other awards.
