Piri Piri

Piri Piri is the Portuguese name for chili peppers , it is still an epithet for spicy dishes in Portugal and the name of a spicy seasoning sauce. The term is also used in countries on the African continent - there also as Peri Peri or Pili Pili - and has spread from the former Portuguese colonies .

Word origin

The term piri piri is found in Swahili and means pepper, pepper . Portuguese traders brought small pods of the Capsicum chinense species to the African colonies. There the name Piri Piri or Peri Peri or Pili Pili was formed. In states such as today's Angola , Zimbabwe , South Africa and Uganda , cultivation was cultivated and the Birdeye chilli was bred from the original plant . In Malawi and Zimbabwe this is grown on a large scale. In Portugal today, Piri Piri generally refers to hot chillies.

Piri Piri as a collective term

In Portugal, more or less all (red) chilli varieties are subsumed under the term. Small and hot fruits are preferred, however, and are also often grown in home gardens.

Piri Piri as a spice

Very often in Portugal, in some areas of Spain and parts of Africa, the chili peppers are bundled, air-dried and only then used as a spice. The dry chillies can then be processed into powder. A seasoning paste can also be made from the crushed fruit by adding lemon juice and / or other spices. This variant is more common in West Africa than in Portugal.

Piri Piri as an addition to the name

Piri Piri as a spice sauce
