Pistorinia is a genus of plants fromthe thick-leaf family (Crassulaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the Spanish physician of Italian descent Santiago Pistorini, personal physician to King Charles III of Spain .

description

The species of the genus Pistorinia are glandular hairy, annual , herbaceous plants with erect shoots . Their green, often red overflowing, sitting, petiole-round to half-petiole-round leaves are arranged with entire margins and alternate.

The terminal inflorescence usually consists of many-flowered cymes. The stalked flowers are five-fold and obdiplostemon . Their green sepals are broad and tapering to a point. The long, yellow, pink or purple, often finely dotted petals are at least half fused together at their base and form a clear corolla tube. The corolla lobes are spread out during the anthesis .

The upright, slender fruits are brown. The brown seeds it contains are ellipsoidal and ribbed.

Systematics and distribution

Pistorinia in flower

The genus Pistorinia is widespread on the Iberian Peninsula and in northern Africa. The first description was made in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . According to Henk 't Hart (1944–2000) the genus Pistorinia consists of the following species:

  • Pistorinia brachyantha Coss. ; occurs in Morocco
  • Pistorinia breviflora Boiss. ; occurs in two subspecies in southern Spain and northern Africa:
    • Pistorinia breviflora Boiss. subsp. breviflora
    • Pistorinia breviflora subsp. intermedia (Boiss. & Reut.) Greuter & Burdet
  • Pistorinia hispanica (L.) DC. ; occurs in Spain and Portugal.

Werner Greuter distinguishes another species that had previously been placed in the genus Cotyledon :

  • Pistorinia attenuata (H. Lindb.) Greuter , which occurs only in Morocco. It comprises two subspecies:
    • Pistorinia attenuata (H. Lindb.) Greuter subsp. attenuata
    • Pistorinia attenuata subsp. mairei (H. Lindb.) Greuter
