André Piters (1965)

André Piters (born January 18, 1931 in Herve ; † October 23, 2014 ) was a Belgian football player .

Athletic career

Piters played from 1951 to 1961 for Standard Liege in the Eredivisie , with the club he won in 1958 and in his farewell year, respectively the Belgian championship. He scored 58 goals in 208 games. The striker also advanced to international at this time, making his debut for the Belgian national team in 1955 . By 1961 he played in 23 international matches for the "red devils", scoring seven goals. He achieved national fame in the 8-3 win over Iceland as part of qualifying for the 1958 World Cup finals with his goal to make it 2-0 when his team-mate Henri Coppens did not convert a penalty directly, but crossed it to Piters.

In 1961 Piters joined league rivals Royal Olympic Club Charleroi . After the club's relegation from the top division in 1963, he moved to Fortuna 54 in the Netherlands . The following year he won the KNVB Cup with a final win against ADO Den Haag . In 1966 he ended his active career.
