Pius August in Bavaria (born August 2, 1786 in Landshut , † August 3, 1837 in Bayreuth ) was Duke in Bavaria from the line Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld zu Gelnhausen .

Life

Pius August was the third child of Duke Wilhelm in Bavaria (1752–1837) from his marriage to Maria Anna (1753–1824), daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Friedrich Michael von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld .

Pius August was a royal Bavarian major general and owner of Infantry Regiment No. 8 in Bayreuth. Neither Pius August nor his wife had much influence on the upbringing of their only child Maximilian, who was supervised by grandfather Wilhelm. Pius was considered a choleric misanthrope who attacked people in the street and beat them to the point of unconsciousness, which led to multiple prison stays.

In 1815 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He died on August 3, 1837 at the age of 51 in Bayreuth , where he had lived in seclusion for most of his life, and was buried in the Banz monastery . The duke's coffin remained there until the crypt was dissolved in 1883 and the transfer to the inner crypt of Tegernsee Castle, where it has been resting ever since.

Marriage and offspring

On May 26, 1807, Pius August married Amalie Luise (1789–1823), daughter of Duke Ludwig Maria von Arenberg , with whom he had a son:

⚭ 1828 Princess Ludovika Wilhelmine of Bavaria (1808-1892)
