The Place du Vieux-Marché , located at the western end of the Rue du Gros-Horloge , is a historic square in the French city of Rouen .

A striking number of half-timbered houses and houses with protruding bay windows stand on the square . This is where the Saint-Sauveur church, destroyed in 1793, was once located, the foundations of which were discovered during the renovation of the square. In 1979, the Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc church was built according to the plans of the architect Louis Arretche . Its bold but controversial architecture is reminiscent of a Viking ship and a fish. The church has the windows of the former Saint-Vincent church, which was formerly on rue Jeanne-d'Arc and was destroyed in 1944. Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc was inaugurated on May 27, 1979 by the then French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing .

The square is best known as the place where Joan of Arc was tortured and burned alive on May 30, 1431. The public execution place with the pillory and the associated fire wall for the pyre was excavated at the same time as the foundation walls of the Saint-Sauveur church. As stipulated in the rehabilitation process in 1456, a cross was placed not far from the place of the pyre. Until 2012, the Musée Jeanne-d'Arc was located south of the square, near the allegedly “oldest hostel in France” . Important executions took place on the square until 1836. Until 1969 it also housed a wholesale market .

There is still a small market in the square. It is located under a hall with a sloping structure, which is reminiscent of the waves of an ocean and whose roof is covered with slate , like the adjacent church .

Until 1944, the Théâtre-Français was located on the square , equipped with half-timbered facades from the 17th century, destroyed by bombing in the Second World War and replaced by new buildings in 1960.

A few steps from the square at 6 rue de la Pie is the house where Pierre Corneille was born, which has been converted into a museum .
