Placide Vernet

Placide Vernet (born June 13, 1922 in Fleury-en-Bière , † August 19, 2018 in Saint-Nicolas-lès-Cîteaux ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman , Trappist and religious historian.

life and work

Vernet, who was born not far from Barbizon , entered the Trappist Cîteaux monastery in 1939 at the age of 17 , made temporary and permanent profession in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1947. Its order name Placide refers to Placidus of Subiaco . After 79 years as a monk and after 71 years as a priest, he died at the age of 96 in his home monastery. In recognition of his research on the history of the Cistercian order and his numerous publications on questions of liturgical reform (including in the Trappist magazine Liturgy ), a commemorative publication was dedicated to him in 2012.

Vernet was used for forced labor from 1943 to 1944 as part of the Service du travail obligatoire in Breitenlee (now Vienna ), from where he made contact with the Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey .
